Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with your whole heart, and lean not to your understanding.
Definition of trust: Reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety of a person or thing; confidence. Confident expectation of something; hope. To have trust or confidence in; to rely on. Instinctive unquestioning belief in and reliance upon something. Conscious trust because of good reasons, definite evidence, or past experience. Absolute confidence and certainty.
I trust my husband. When we married he promised to love, honor and cherish me and to be faithful to me, forsaking all others. He has been faithful and has kept that promise for 43 years so I can trust him.
The Lord has promised to be with us. He has promised to take care of us and our needs.
Psalm 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous
and his ears are attentive to their cry;17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them;
he delivers them from all their troubles.19 A righteous man may have many troubles,
but the LORD delivers him from them all.
2Corinthians 1:20 For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ.(NIV)
For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen (KJV)
Whatever God has promised gets stamped with the Yes of Jesus. (The Message)
Christ says "Yes" to all of God's promises. That's why we have Christ to say "Amen" [a] for us to the glory of God. (Contemporary English Version)
The Lord can be trusted because His promises are true. He never breaks His promise to us. He has promised He will never leave us or forsake us.(Hebrews 13: 5 I will never leave you or forsake you. Matthew 28:20 Lo I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.)
Some examples of trust from the Bible.
Abraham. When Abraham was 90 and Sarah was 80 God told them they would have a son. After waiting a very long time they got impatient and Sarah gave Abraham her servant and Abraham and the servant had a son. His name was Ismael, but he was not the son of promise because God said that Sarah would bear a son. When Abraham was 100 and Sarah was 90 Sarah finally had a son and they named him Isaac. This was the son that God had promised them, but because they were impatient and did things on their own, they had to battle with Ismael and his mother because of jealousy. The descendents of Ismael and the descendents of Isaac are battling even today. When we hear a promise from God we need to trust that His promise is true and wait for him to bring that promise to pass.
Isaac. When Isaac was just a young lad, God told Abraham to take Isaac to the mountain to sacrifice him. Abraham didn’t question the reasoning of God he just obeyed knowing that God’s promise that Isaac was the son of promise was true. Isaac was obedient to his father and willingly laid himself on the altar of sacrifice because he trusted his father and he trusted in the promise of God. When Abraham was ready to plunge the knife into Isaac, the Lord stopped him and said , “because you have obeyed me and have not held back even your own son, I will bless you and your seed will multiply and the whole earth shall be blessed.
Are there things we hold back from God? Are there habits and things and people that we don’t want to give up even when God tells us to do so? Are there promised we have received from God that we don’t want to wait for? God’s timing is not the same as ours. When God makes us a promise, He will keep that promise. God promised Moses that he would free his people from slavery in Egypt, but he had to wait 40 years to see the fulfillment of that promise. God spoke to Joseph in a dream when he was young and told him he would be a great leader, but he waited many years for that to happen. In the meantime he was sold into slavery by his brothers and put in jail for something he didn’t do, but through it all he continued to pray and believe in God. His trust in the Lord and his willingness to wait for the promise paid off and he became the greatest ruler in Egypt under Pharoah and saved his family from the famine in the land.
Has God given you a promise? Are you tired of waiting? There are things that God has to work in us in order for the promised to come to pass. Trust in Him. He knows just what we need in every situation. Sometimes we have to go through trials and testing. These trials work something of integrity in us so we will be ready to receive the promise. When Moses tried to be the leader of his people on his own he killed a man and had to run away and hide. After spending many years in the desert taking of his father-in-law’s sheep he was ready to be a leader. God had worked something in him so he would lead his people in love and not in anger.
1Peter 4:12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
It is so important for us to trust in the Lord in spite of what we see. We can see how God has been faithful to those in scriptures in the past. We may even have seen the fulfillment of some promises in our own lives. We need to remember these things. We need to look to God and trust that his promises are always true no matter what we may see right now. If He has promised you something you will see the fulfillment of that promise. When we look at our circumstances we begin to wonder if we really heard from God and then the enemy comes and brings us fear or anger or some other negative feeling. But when we lift our eyes to the Lord he will encourage us and we will be able to wait for the promise knowing that God only has our best interest in mind.
Psalm 121
1 I lift up my eyes to the hills-where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the LORD,the Maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD watches over you— the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;
8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
This is the promise of God for all of us who have accepted Jesus as our Savior.
Job. ( Tell the story of Job). What did Job do when he had so much trouble? Did he blame God and lose his faith? No.
Job 1:21-22 "Naked I came from my mother's womb,
and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised." In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.
Job 42:2 2 “I know that You can do everything,
And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.( New King James Version)
Job 42:5 “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear,
But now my eye sees You”
Job trusted the Lord in the midst of terrible circumstances. I doubt if any of us have gone through the trials he had, but he never lost hope in the Lord. If he could trust the Lord, not seeing Jesus, how much more could we trust Him now that Jesus is living in us.
Hebrews 11: 6-12,17-40
All of these great saints in the Bible believed in God’s promise. They had faith in the face of unbelievable circumstances and they saw some victory, but they did not receive the promise of the Messiah. Now we have received the fullness of God through Jesus Christ. We have received the promise. Now we must trust in him and not in our own human understanding. God is always in control and he only wants His best for us.
Hebrews 12:1-2 1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God
We must put off everything that causes us to take our eyes off of the Lord. Look at Jesus, who has paid the price for all of our shame and anger and unbelief. He is sitting on the throne of God. He is in control of everything that happens in our lives. We need to trust in Him. He is the only one who can change our situation. He may even change us so that we can live in victory in the midst of our situation.
Our own human understanding does not see into the future. It only sees our present circumstances. But the Lord sees all things, He knows all things-past present and future. He is always present with us. He is everywhere. He is all powerful. He reigns over the heavens and the earth. He is always looking for those who will trust in Him in all circumstances. Chronicles 28:9 . the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the imaginations of thoughts: if you seek him you will find him.
Trust in the Lord with your whole heart and lean not to your own understanding.
Psalm 20:5-7 5 We will shout for joy when you are victorious and will lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the LORD grant all your requests.
6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of his right hand.
7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
